🧬 GLP-1 Series: Can GLP-1 drugs help treat fatty liver disease (aka MASLD/MASH)?
Visceral fat might be the final boss hiding in plain sight. You may look healthy on the outside while excess fat around your organs quietly drives metabolic problems.
Fatty liver disease is closely linked to obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular risk factors.
Fatty liver can progress to MASH (formerly NASH), causing liver inflammation and damage that may lead to scarring (fibrosis) and eventually cirrhosis.
What have GLP1 clinical trials found?
LEAN: Liraglutide improved NASH resolution and reduced worsening of liver scarring in a small phase 2 trial.
ESSENCE: Semaglutide 2.4 mg showed:
•MASH resolution: 63% vs 34% with placebo
•Improvement in liver scarring: 37% vs 22%
SYNERGY-NASH: Tirzepatide, a dual GIP/GLP-1 medication, showed MASH resolution in 44–62% of patients vs 10% with placebo.
What does this mean?
These results are promising. Some medications may help improve liver inflammation and scarring, particularly in people with more advanced fatty liver disease.
But improved liver biopsy results do not automatically mean fewer cases of cirrhosis, liver failure, or death.
We still need longer-term studies to confirm whether these treatments prevent serious liver complications.
The bottom line: Metabolic health affects both the heart and liver.
