How the brain handles painful memories
Did you know your brain can sometimes make painful memories harder to access?
When something is extremely stressful or traumatic, the brain doesn’t always store the memory like an ordinary event. Stress can affect how the hippocampus, amygdala, and other brain systems process and retrieve memories.
Sometimes this can mean parts of an experience become blurry, fragmented, or difficult to recall. In other cases, people may remember the event very clearly but feel emotionally disconnected from it.
It’s not quite like the brain hitting a “delete” button. More often, memory is complicated: some details can fade, while others remain incredibly vivid.
Your brain is constantly deciding what to strengthen, what to weaken, and what information to retrieve.
