π HOW IS POTS DIAGNOSED?
POTS is more than a fast heart rate when you stand.
Doctors look for a pattern:
β€οΈ A sustained heart-rate rise within 10 minutes of standing
β’ β₯30 beats/min in adults
β’ β₯40 beats/min in ages 12β19
π§ Symptoms occur when upright and are chronic, typically β₯3 months, such as:
β’ Lightheadedness
β’ Racing or pounding heart
β’ Fatigue
β’ Brain fog
β’ Weakness
β’ Shortness of breath
π©Έ No orthostatic hypotension
β’ Systolic BP drop β₯20 mmHg or
β’ Diastolic BP drop β₯10 mmHg
Testing may include:
β’ Heart rate & blood pressure lying down and standing
β’ A 10-minute stand test
β’ Tilt-table testing when needed
β’ ECG and selected blood tests
A fast heart rate when standing does not automatically mean POTS.
Dehydration, anemia, thyroid problems, medications, and other conditions can also raise heart rate.
π The diagnosis is about the whole clinical picture, not one heart-rate number.
