🧬 GLP-1 Series: What Is GLP-1?
GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) is a hormone your gut releases after you eat.
It helps regulate blood sugar and appetite by:
🔹 Stimulating insulin release when blood sugar rises
🔹 Reducing glucagon, which raises blood sugar
🔹 Slowing stomach emptying
🔹 Signaling fullness to the brain
💊 GLP-1 receptor agonists, such as semaglutide, mimic this hormone's effects. They can help manage type 2 diabetes and support weight loss.
But these medications aren't magic fixes. Obesity is a complex chronic disease, and treatment should be individualized.
🔬 What about long-term safety?
Some GLP-1 drugs have up to 3–5 years of randomized-trial safety data. However, we don't yet have decades of randomized-trial evidence on continuous use. Rare or delayed side effects may take longer to identify.
These medications are changing how we treat obesity, but understanding their long-term benefits and risks remains essential.
💡 Back to basics: The fundamentals still matter.
🥗 Good nutrition
🚶 Regular walking and exercise
😴 Good sleep habits
Medication can be an important tool, but sustainable lifestyle habits remain essential for long-term health.
📚 Coming up in this series: GLP-1 clinical trials on cardiovascular disease, heart failure, and diabetes
