🧬 GLP-1 Series: Can GLP-1 Medications Help People With HFpEF?
❤️ What is HFpEF?
Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) means the heart can still pump blood out normally, but it has trouble relaxing and filling with blood.
It is often associated with high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, kidney disease, an irregular heartbeat (AFib), coronary artery disease, and sleep apnea.
Not all clinical trials are the same.
🔹 STEP-HFpEF / STEP-HFpEF DM: Semaglutide improved symptoms, physical function, and weight in people with obesity-related HFpEF.
🔹 SUMMIT: Tirzepatide reduced worsening heart failure events in people with obesity-related HFpEF.
🔹 SELECT: Only 12.9% of participants had HFpEF. The trial did not specifically enroll patients because they had HFpEF.
🩺 Tips: You cannot assume a medication helps every type of heart failure just because it showed heart benefits in another trial. The patients studied and the outcomes measured matter.
A few things to know about HFpEF:
🔹 Diagnosis matters. Feeling short of breath does not automatically mean heart failure. Doctors consider symptoms, physical examination, heart ultrasound, blood tests, and other findings.
🔹 Treatment has come a long way. HFpEF was once difficult to treat because no medication had demonstrated clear benefits. Today, several medications can help reduce heart failure events or improve symptoms in selected patients. The right treatment depends on the individual.
🔹 Weight and exercise matter. For people with obesity-related HFpEF, losing excess weight and improving physical fitness can help with daily activities and quality of life.
