A heart attack can change your life. Could GLP-1 medications help protect your heart afterward?

Several major clinical trials studied GLP-1 medications in people with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, including patients with a history of heart attack.

❤️ What did the trials find?

• Liraglutide: 13% relative reduction in major cardiovascular events (LEADER).

• Semaglutide: 26% relative reduction (SUSTAIN-6).

• Albiglutide: 22% relative reduction (HARMONY Outcomes).

• Semaglutide 2.4 mg: 20% relative reduction in people with overweight or obesity and established cardiovascular disease, even without diabetes (SELECT).

Major cardiovascular events generally included cardiovascular death, nonfatal heart attack, and nonfatal stroke. These results reflect each trial's primary outcome, not heart attacks alone.

Not every GLP-1 medication showed a significant reduction in cardiovascular events. Benefits also depend on the specific medication, medical history and patient population.
