Did you know peripartum and postpartum conditions are rare, but real?
As a cardiologist, let’s talk about Peripartum Cardiomyopathy (PPCM).
PPCM is a rare form of heart failure that can develop in the last month of pregnancy or in the months after giving birth. The heart becomes weakened and enlarged.
Who is at higher risk?
• Age >30
• African ancestry
• Multiple pregnancy (twins or more)
• History of preeclampsia, eclampsia, or high blood pressure during pregnancy
• 4 or more previous pregnancies
• Maternal cocaine use
• Long-term use of certain labor-stopping medications
Most cases still occur during a woman’s first or second pregnancy.
Important for future pregnancies: Even if heart function recovers, there is still a risk of PPCM returning in a later pregnancy.
If heart function has not fully recovered, doctors usually advise against another pregnancy because the risks are higher.
If you have had PPCM or have risk factors, talk with your doctor about heart screening and family planning.
Early awareness can save lives.
