Could Robot Babies Grow Up?

Could a robot baby actually grow into a robot child?

Imagine bringing home a robotic baby that starts out crying, babbling, and needing attention—but instead of staying a baby forever, it gradually develops.

As its software and AI evolve, it could learn to talk, recognize people, develop preferences, play games, and even change its appearance to look older. Eventually, you could have a robot that started as a baby and grew into a childlike companion.

It wouldn't biologically grow like a human, of course. Its development would come through AI, software, and possibly changes to its physical body.

Would people form the same kind of emotional bond with a robot child that they would with a traditional pet or companion? The future of robotics could make that question much more interesting than it sounds today.
