Health Myth vs. Reality: Thin ≠ Healthy
HEALTH MYTH VS. REALITY
Myth: “Thin = Healthy”
Reality: Your size doesn’t tell the whole story.
You can look slim and still carry high levels of visceral fat (fat stored deep inside the abdomen around vital organs)
Sometimes described as “thin outside, fat inside” (TOFI), excess visceral fat is associated with increased risk of:
• Type 2 diabetes
• Heart disease
• Fatty liver disease
• Chronic inflammation
So, what is visceral fat?
Unlike the soft fat you can pinch, visceral fat surrounds organs such as the liver, pancreas, and intestines. Too much can disrupt metabolism and increase long-term health risks.
Factors that can contribute include:
• Physical inactivity
• Excess calorie intake
• Chronic stress
• Poor sleep
• Genetics
• Hormonal changes
• Excess alcohol
• Smoking
The takeaway: Health isn’t defined by your size or BMI alone.
Look beyond the mirror and pay attention to:
✓ Waist circumference
✓ Blood sugar
✓ Blood pressure
✓ Muscle and bone strength
✓ Sleep quality
✓ Stress management
Healthy on the outside doesn’t always mean healthy on the inside.
Focus on building health from the inside out.
